Abstract
Background: Stroke and Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) are common causes of death and the complication management is crucial for the recuperation from the diseases and the quality of life. Especially, Pneumonia and Heart Failure are major complications of Stroke and AMI. This follow-up study of Stroke and AMI in-patients would provide the statistical analysis on incidence ratio, hospital stay and survival rate of the complications.

Methods: This retrospective population-based study uses National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort Database from 2002 to 2013. Stroke (I60-I63), Pneumonia (J12-J18, J69.0), Acute Myocardial Infarction (I21-I23) and Heart Failure (I50) are defined with ICD-10 code.

Results: The ratio of incident pneumonia in stoke inpatients has been showing 17.3% in 2007 to 17.7% in 2012. And the ratio of incident heart failure among AMI inpatients has been 11.9% in 2007 to 15.1% in 2012. Average hospitalization of pneumonia with stroke inpatients and heart failure with AMI inpatients are longer than stroke hospitalization only (SHO) and AMI hospitalization only (AMIHO). The 5-year survival rate of pneumonia with stroke inpatient and heart failure with AMI inpatient is 20~30% less than that of SHO, AMIHO.

Conclusions: The major complications of Stroke, AMI impact hospital stay and survival rate. So, the better management system for Stroke, AMI and its complications is required.
